I would like to know what has been the results for people that have used Atopica or the generic Cyclosporine on their dogs. Most vets charge $200 for 30 100mg capsules and most places that I have checked online aren't much cheaper. If anybody knows of a good/cheaper place to buy it please let me know.

I'd look at some of the Canadian or Australian pharmacies - of course, the larger quantity you buy, the more the price will come down...I found some for a little over $3/pill for cyclosporine in larger quantities. But that's half price over what the vet is selling for, so if you can afford to order 100 at a time you could have a significant savings. There's some discussion about the safety of some of these medications - I personally have never had an issue that I know of, but I don't use them for big stuff either.

My spouse is a pharmacist - I don't know exactly what the deal is, but there is a shortage of some of the components of Atopica, which is primarily used in humans for anti-rejection of organs. It's new, it's expensive - Novartis products often are - and there's a LOT to be read on the long-term effects.

One thing you might do is contact your local pharmacy and see what the human equivalent cost is through them. Sometimes with meds like this there isn't much difference, and with something this new and there being a shortage of ingredients you probably won't see a lot of difference. However, I've seen pet meds significantly jacked up over the human equivalent just because they were dispensed by a vet. Those guys have to have a markup on their product too, since they aren't really buying at that much cheaper than you can shop it online on some products.

We bit the bullet and tried it on Kohla (he is allergic and reactive to everything!) After the first month we were encouraged but then its effectiveness seemed to taper off over a 3 month span. After that, the benefit/hazard/cost ratio just didn't make sense. We stopped using it.

Kohla had no side effects - it just didn't help that much.

When Dash had cancer I got most of his drugs at Costco and they were a lot cheaper then any place else an a couple of the drugs. They even offered a slight discount for medicines for a pet once you signed up for it. Got the cats's insulin there too and it was cheapre then any place else that I could find.

The Dr. I work for prescribes it some and we've seen some really good results with it. Small dog runs around $70 for 30 days worth and I'm not quite sure off the top of my head what it is for large dogs but we haven't really seen any side effects.

Floyd is 100# and required 150 mg of Atopica per day = $300 per month! And that was the ONLY thing that worked for him. It kept his allergies at bay without any weird side effects. But the cost was killing me so after much research, I found that the human form of Atopica was Cyclosporine. Walgreens has a Family Plan that allows dogs. The plan itself cost a one time fee of $30 (or so). The cost for 150mg of Cyclosporine is approx. $130 per month! Compared to $300, I was thrilled! Good luck to you! I hope you find something that works.

What did you do after the Atopica lost its effectiveness? Did you substitute the Atopica with any other type of medications?
