Just for grins, I though I'd share with you the relationship one of my daughter's dogs is having with himself. He's humping the air!!! Okay, so if you've never seen a dog do this, it is absolutely hysterical. (And, might I add, it's a change from loving on the other male dog. )
I have said for a long time I think humping / mounting in all its manifestations is one of the most under-researched, most misunderstood of all dog behaviors! I would love to see an in-depth study on the topic! (But can't imagine asking for grant funding on that research haha!)

Which begs the question: Do only dogs behave this way with such frequency?
But . . . they'd probably give you the money for the grant. So many other ridiculous grants have been awarded.
And what's up with this same dog cleaning the inside of the other dog's ears? Can that be as yummy as he makes it look? (Not that I want to find out . . . )

I know what ya mean. One of mine is so "passionate" about cleaning out my other dogs' ears you'd think there was peanut butter in there.

LOL!
Something that some people don't realise, is that some female dogs will "hump."
I've had two females that also lift their legs to mark territory and are about as the boys in that regard.
If I had a dog that regularly air humped, I would catch the behavior, mark and reward it so I could eventually put it on cue, and then I'd incorporate it into my choreography for a canine freestyle routine. That dance move would either win over all the judges or get me thrown out of the competition.. but either way it'd be a crowd pleaser!

HA! That would be hysterical if you did it right.
The notorious Jean Donaldson (hugely once-popular "purely positive" dog trainer and author) 2007 Buffy humping-on-cue video has disappeared. As has her blog and comments.
I saw it, pretty disturbing, actually. It was sort of the end of her as a PP advocate and trainer.
