If he does it all the time, stop giving him rawhide would be the obvious solution. As far as eating it again, that's what dogs do, perfectly normal.

What makes you think you need to do anything?
I gave up rushing to hold dogs back from eating puke years ago.
They do it when we're not home. Why shouldn't they do it when we're there?
If they want it, I'm not stopping them. Less to clean up. If there is medication in it, all the better.
Sure, this will gross most people out, but like NHDave said, "That's what dogs do, perfectly normal."

I quit giving my dogs rawhide a long time ago because it became lodged their throats so surely it could become loaded even deeper.

The obvious answer is to quit giving the dog rawhide.

When Karma had that inexplicable vomiting thing going on last month, I had to let her eat it. If I didn't, she'd have never gotten any nutrition. And, as George Costanza shouted when he discovered his date purging in the ladies room after dinner, "Hey! I paid for that food!"

They eat pooh and other nasties found about in their travels, no worries. Sure, they're family members first but they're still dogs.
Oh yeah, stop the rawhide, obviously.

My only comment is that if the dog has puked on carpeting then get over there immediately and clean the area thoroughly. Dogs have been known to lick and chew at the areas they have puked on, tryingt to get it all back. They can sometime damage the carpet.

I didn't read this as that the dog ate its own vomit. I read it that the dog puked... and then was hungry again, so ate something else. I'm confused. OP, come back, please.
