When I walk my Collie (2 year old dog) on leash, he is out front of me and walks from one side of the sidewalk to the other side of the sidewalk through the entire 1 hour walk. I have never seen a dog do this zig zag walking pattern before. Usually dogs either heal to the left side of you or walk in a somewhat straight line in front of you. Is this zig zag walk a herding dog trait? Please respond. Thank you.
Lorraine

Since this is the Canada forum, I assume that you are walking him along a deserted stretch of the Canada-US border.

That being said, it would be natural to then assume that you have a Border Collie. Thus, that is the natural walk for a Border Collie -- they always try to keep one foot on each side.

Yes for a herding dog on loose lead [not told to heal!] And a dog that does not have training!
BKelly that too is a nice answer!!

Your dog is an alcoholic! Lock up all of your liquor beer and wine.

He's just checking out the smells. As long as he's healthy, don't worry about it, just enjoy him.

If it's something he's always done, it's probably nothing to worry about, it could be excitement, new scents etc.

When not "on command" to heel all three of our collies wander back and forth. We let them do it a bit on every walk-they get three times the exercise with all their zigzagging!

we don't always have cody on command and he goes back and forth smelling.
It's a nosy,herding, young dog,energy trait.
As long as he doesn't zig zag when he runs. =)

I just finished reading all these answers and have to say KBilly you have the BEST answer! LOL! Just thought I would add if you think zig zagging is weird when parker (my male) isn't walking along side me in a heel position he likes to do donuts (or circles) around me. Try having to deal with that while walking 2 dogs.
