Are they rare? Never knew such a dog existed but she surely is a beauty.

see a lot of white GSD's down here
its not rare but it is resessive and not an "accepted color" in the AKC show-ring.

they do, like ost pure white dogs tend to be a little more sensitive to light and more prone to sunburn othe nose and ears primarily but otherwise while "controversial" assuming health teting and good breeding practices they should be no more healthy or sickly than any other GSD

pretty arnt they?!
and what a good "momma"

The white gene is recessive in GSD lines, although some breeders have chosen to focus on it and develop lines of predominantly white GSDs. They are, as foxy said, a disqualification in the AKC show ring, although they color is accepted under other, less common, registries here in the US. The dog you posted is a beautiful pup, and her acceptance of the little goat is adorable.

On a side note, there is a breed known as the Berger Blanc Suisse, or white Swiss shepherd. The breed was developed and recognized in France in 2003, and has been growing in popularity around the world since then. GSD's with the recessive white gene were used to create the breed, and they still retain many of the GSD characteristics. Neat dogs.

White GSD's have been around for a long time, one of my neighbors had one when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's.

She looks just like our Sweetie! And the dog is cute, too! No, seriously, the dog looks just like Present Dog. To my knowledge the White Shepherd breed predates the black-brown GSD. We researched the history of the WSD when we got our Sweetie, and it's a fascinating story of a WSD-type dog actually being an ancestor of later black-brown German SD lines in the 19th century. Hitler almost did away with WSDs in Nazi-occupied Europe because he perceived the genetic make-up to be inferior, confusing the white fur with an albino gene, which of course it isn't. That's why they're considered somewhat rare. The upside is that some genetic problems developed through the breeding of the GSD have not caught up with the WSD (yet).

Few people we meet are able to identify Sweetie as a WSD. They assume she's a mix, a Husky, or even a wolf. Aside from the tall ears she does look a lot like a white wolf...she has the same gait. Maybe we should have named her Lobo! Or Lupe!
