A year ago - when our 9 year old retriever started to exhibit a shaking in his hind quarters - we took him to the vet thinking it was simply arthritis or a hip problem. The vet was alarmed - called for a neuro consult - who swooped in and took about 10 minutes with Casey and pronounced he had hemangiosarcoma - a common brain cancer in goldens.
We freaked. Had to find our OWN oncology consult - who spent over 3 hours with Casey and proclaimed him healthy.
I was more than relieved. Angry at the vet - but relieved.
Last three weeks - he's been peeing ALOT - with at least two accidents in the house - unheard of. We thought - urinary tract infection. Did antibiotics - with no stopping of peeing.
Did an ultrasound - and the news was bad. Transitional Cell Carcinoma. Lining the ureters and bladder.
Eventually blocking off passage - leading to death.
We are in shock. This is a cancer common in ALL dogs.... and cats, btw. One study links it to herbacide fertilizers.
Has anyone here had experience with this? We are contemplating putting in a stent - to keep his urethra open... but he's 10 years old. We are not ready to say goodbye - but we DO NOT want him to suffer. We are again seeing the oncology vet this week to see what our choices are. The stent placement costs upward of $3500. Yes, you read that right.
