No Katie will always be my dog. She has been trained to assit me in my home & shopping. As I am handicap in power chair. But yes there are people that take in soon to be service dogs that are puppies & when they reach certain age /muturity the dog are returned for more intense training to be sold to a handicap person. The best example of that is Guide Dogs. Dogs trained for hearing are usually mix breeds from shelters. Service dogs like Katie come from every where. Puppies are tested at 8 weeks old mostly to see reactions to different things. Those that show promise are placed into homes for more basic training not unlike training any pet dog should have.
Housetraining, basic training, bathing, riding in cars, lots & lots of socializing. Then they too are returned to be trained to assit people that are handicap. Turn on lights, dressing & undressing, fetch things, etc. Once these dogs are fully trained they to are sold into homes to assit the handicap person with activities of daily life.
Since I trained dogs before I ended up in a wheel chair I am doing my own training with help from friends & family. For those who are not handicap but would like to help in this there are puppy trainers needed. To raise a puppy that one day will assit a handicap person is a great thing to do . The only pit fall is you go thru all the baby stages, just when they start acting like they have some sence you have to give them up. I think that this is the reason that most dogs are being trained behind bars. Tho in my town there are still quite a few puppy raisers.

1st Blood hounds are a type of service dog But not what this thread is about. 2nd Blood hounds do not assit people in activities of daily living. They are trained to track people down. If you are interested in Tracking feel free to start a thread on the subject. I am sure you will get a good response. Thank You.
