It has reached the point My Basset can't have any dry dog food. I was doing a canned/dry split to save money. It's time for an all canned diet. He's old.
We give treats (a few pieces of kibble) every time he comes into the house from being outside, every time we clean his eyes, etc. Since dry food is irritating his stomach so much, I don't want to give him dry anything.
I ran out of canned yesterday, and last night and this morning I had to give him Pepcid after eating. (I need to buy some gasx.) Dry can put him in a pre-bloat, lately more often than not. He doesn't need to go to the vets. This has been going on his whole life, and the vet was consulted a long time ago. We treat with gasx whenever his stomach swells and he does fine. I only recently started giving him Pepcid after a vet recommended it for another sensitive stomach issue a few months ago.
Here's my treat problem. I know about carrots, etc. But I'm worried about feeding him foods that can cause gas. Canned food it best for avoiding bloat because it's mostly protein and doesn't cause gas.
Does anyone have a people food idea for a treat that won't cause gas?
I boil chicken thighs in broth, shred them up a bit, and keep in the fridge for quick treats. My dogs also love a lick of plain greek yogurt or peanut butter as a treat.
Boiled chicken, boiled/cooked any kind of meat. Doesn't have to be cooked, actually. One of my chis likes raw liver/kidney. The others won't touch it raw, so I sear it.
I used to boil eggs for my little foster and chop up just the egg whites for her as treats. One egg lasted her about 3 days. There are a lot of great ideas here that should keep your sweet basset happy.
That's good to know. I'll probably do yogurt and cottage cheese because they don't require prep.
I'm not sure how my old dog is doing. I hope he'll be with us for a couple more years. When I got home from the ER vet on Sunday, my son said he didn't want to lose another pet. (Lab died two years ago.) I assured him he just needed a nausea shot, but I reminded him that the Basset is 13 years old. It will happen sooner than later. I'm hoping for later.
