MY 6 year old Bichon is limping and I think because he jumped one to many times off the bed onto a tile bedroom floor. What over the counter meds can I give him to relieve the pain and swelling. My last Bichon did the same thing and tore his ACL. In time it healed, the operation was too costly. Can I have him( 22 lbs) ibuprofen and baby aspirin?
It c/b luxating patella, I would take him to the vet to be checked out and def limit his jumping on/off furniture esp onto hard floors, we have small dogs too and have todo the same thing, I'd prob hold off giving him anything til you take him to the vet as it could mask the pain and he could reinjure it, making it much worse, that said hopefully you can get him in Tom., good luck
I will get him to the Vet tomorrow. The problem surfaced during the week and he got better in a few days with Benadryl and baby aspirin but re- injured his leg yesterday. He was scampering around last night full of energy and then Bam, limping and not too mobile. Should I just let him rest or try to walk out the sprain?
Am not a vet but would prob. crate him for now but would take him out on a leash to give him potty breaks etc, it wont hurt him. Mine like jumping on/off furniture but they can easily land the wrong way so there's a box on the extra chair now, the other one doesnt attempt it (shorter legs), would prob. keep him off stairs too for now. Our bed is high too so they cant jump on/off it, luckily they've never hurt themselves but Ive seen others who have (in fact a friend's actually broke her neck falling/jumping off their bed in the middle of the nite). Am also leery of hip problems they can have. Prob. a bit paranoid but the last thing I want is an injury that can be prevented. I would think a baby aspirin w/b ok for a bichon but would prob. hold off til tom. unless you verify it w/ the vet (or someone else chimes in), you prob. can google it.
I hope everything goes ok for his leg, and FYI in the future for your dog:
We have two toy breed dogs and they like to jump up on our bed and the couch/chair in our living room. To save the strain on their little legs jumping up and down, we got them an attractive second hand ottoman for the end of the bed, and two small foot stools for in front of the couch and chair.
BTW, you have to teach them to use all of these by putting your dog on them and encouraging them to go up or down with a treat. It only takes once or twice til they get the hang of it.
My Shepherd is currently having laser therapy for the same thing.
He had this habit of jumping off the rear deck, which is about 3 feet high, rather than walking down the steps.
The vet said he bruised the muscles in his shoulder.
This therapy is working wonders.
Tomorrow is the third therapy session, and two more after that.
Presently he no longer limps, and is doing fine.
Talk to your vet about laser therapy.
