I posted this in the NJ Forum. Then I thought Duhhhhh... I should be posting this in both DOGS/PETS & New Jersey forums.
I truly believe that if you put your request out there, it will come to you. I know, it sounds flaky. But I believe in fate.
Here is my wish.
I really want a big dog. English Mastif/Cane Corso/Saint Bernard/Weimeriener Great Dane, etc a mix.
I want to adopt a puppy or a fairly young dog from a shelter or a breeder (I have heard of breeders giving away less than perfect puppies).
I've just started searching Pet Finder and found one Cane Corso mix but she is in a Southern State and therefore, I anticipate a very expensive transport fee involved. Plus I still have not received an email reply from them.
And so my search continues.......
I think I'll say a little prayer and wish on the next shooting star I see in my backyard.
Thanks for reading.......
Im glad to hear that you're trying to adopt. Kuddos for that. Have you had any of the mentioned breeds before?
Good luck on your search!
Growing up, as a kid, we had a Saint Bernard mix and later as an adult, I had a Black Lab. Wonderful dogs.
Amazon-thanks for the info & DM. I'll look into it further.
I loved their website quote. Let's see if I can remember it after reading quickly......
If dogs don't go to heaven, then I don't want to go there. When I die, I want to go where the dogs go.
I am glad you want to adopt but do you have any experience with Cane Corso, Mastiff, etc. Many dogs of molosser foundation stock require a very very skilled handler.
St Bernards tend to have been bred for the pet market but Cane Corsos, Boerbels, Anatolins, and other Mastiff type dogs have been bred for a long time as guard dogs

Thanks for the reply.
No, I do not have any experience other than what I mentioned earlier.
No, I am not a very very skilled handler. I am a everyday average SAHM.
No, I am not looking for a pure bred, I am to adopt/rescue a mutt/mix.
Would I still be be allowed to adopt? I have love, time & financial security.
Yes, I will take my adopted dog to obedience school.
Yes, I have the proper enviroment for a large dog.
Yes, I have a wonderful support system at home which allows me the time to devote to a large dog.
My advice on the obedience is to find someone who knows how to work with these breeds - the typical person working with typical pets is not often equipped to work with dogs with true natural aggression and dominance, desired traits for the breeds that will be in your mix [or purebred if it happens that way]
A shutzhund club may be a good place to make some contacts, but even then many sport dogs have had the true aggression bred out of them and are in play/prey mode and not working in defense. I know you may not want to do aggression training but you have to be in full control and that is more than the clicker/treats crowd can often handle. {I am a strong advocate of motivational training but we are talking about dogs bred with a purpose}
I have heard they don't do bitework with Boerbels for instance because they can break the bite bar in a sleeve. [and because really the medium sized dogs are better for this because of their speed and agility - a tiny malinois can hit like a ton of bricks]
For my experience - I do not do bitework but I have had German Shepherd dogs from working lines for about 30 years. My current working dog is from Czech Police lines [there was a well know kennel, pohranicni straze, that bred dogs for police service over there]
