I have a 1 yr old Shih Tzu with constant ear infections. I took her to the vet once for it back when she was a few months old. He gave me some expensive drops and it keeps coming back.
I have been using ear wipes from Petsmart to remove the smelly build up. It actually takes two people to hold her down to let me do it. She's just insane! Does anyone have any recommendations for 'over the counter' type solutions? Any particular ear drops? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!
MSJ, it could be one of several things; yeast, ear mites, allergies to diet maybe. Check these articles out, and hit the vet again for a thorough ear canal exam before going the over the counter route, as it may not be what a product targets: http://animalpetdoctor.homestead.com/Ears.html
I always keep tubes of Panalog to take care of this problem. You can get it at your veteranarian's office. It has always worked for me and I have had dogs all of my adult life.

I have a couple of floppy eared dogs (Labrador Retrievers). They are susceptible to ear problems because their ears naturally trap moisture. I've been using VET Solutions, ear cleaning solution. I've had great luck with it. I give them a shot once a week, massage it into their ears and when when they shake their heads most is expelled. I follow up with a clean cloth. I've tried over the counter cleaners in the past with little reuslts. Good luck to you and your pooch!
I agree that a return trip to the vet is in order. There are many reasons for recurrent ear infections, some very serious and some not so much. Your vet needs to identify the CAUSE, not just treat the symptom.

My lab has the same problem, but it's the first time in his 7 years. I'm hoping it WONT keep recurring.
Has the vet told you what kind of infections they are?
For yeast you can start adding yogurt (I use plain) to your dogs food to prevent. This works with varying degrees of success for owners with floppy eared breeds.
For mites you can use Revolution (also does heart worm, fleas and some ticks) it's a Rx topical one monthly treatment.
For bacteria...I have no OTC help. But if it continues you may want to ask for a culture so the right antibiotic can be prescribed.
My yellow lab used to have problems with recurrent yeast infections in his ears. When we adopted him, the foster 'parent's' vet had given them drops for a bacterial infection. When our vet figured out what was going on and prescribed an anit-fungal drop, it still took about 3 treatments to get it under control. Now I clean their ears 2 or 3 times a month, and whenever they get a bath. We haven't had a problem since. We also changed his diet, and I think that helped.
Hi, I have a mixed breed that had chronic ear infections til I took him to the allergist. A year of shots and no more infections! Also, I found a wonderful ear cleaner at my local holistic pet store - K9 Liquid Health Ear Solutions Ear Cleanser. It has Gentian Violet in it so you have to be VERY careful, it stains. I pour some in and immediately stuff a cotton ball to in his ear to absorb the excess before I start working it in.
