Technically it is 5 years for animal abuse and 5 for habitual driving offences but it doesn't really matter. he won't be around to pull something like this again and maybe it will deter others from the same thing.

wonder if they treat animal abusers in prison the same way the treat child molesters.

You should go check out a commercial cattle feedlot sometime and decide how much time those people should get behind bars. And cattle are every bit as smart as dogs in their own way. It's a very sad situation, that's why I am very strict about where we buy our meat, only grass fed/organic animal products.
