The neighbor's up the block got a boxer puppy, male, about 18 months ago. A couple of times in the past, when it was younger, it came into the street when we passed walking our dogs but obeyed the owner and went back into the yard. Now that the dog is approaching being an adult, his approach is different. Today, we were on the opposite side of the street, he came to the edge of the yard and the owner was calling him but he did not respond to the owner and instead, rushed at us across the street stood frozen in a stare down with one of my dogs. I fired my stun gun which usually gets their attention, the owner was still calling him but the dog just seemed to be standing their daring my dog to move. I had two senior dogs on traffic leads and my adult son with Down syndrome with me. The man told me not to fire the stun gun at his dog and I told him then keep it in your yard at which time he said "How would I do that?" and I told him, "I have no idea but get it done." Generally, I would have ignored the situation but instead I called animal control. I now realized that this was the same dog that came into our yard a couple of months ago and decided he would leave when he got ready. Animal control is going to give him a warning and has said that I should call it in each time. There are a lot of dog bites, 22 bites in May in a population of 25,000 people and that appears to be a normal monthly amount here. The Animal Control officer seemed to think that the dog had not been socialized by my description. To me having seen a lot of dogs, this dog was just waiting for mine to make a move. My dogs are not aggressive. I have been advised to get pepper spray and another suggestion is bear spray but I really hesitate to use that with my dogs and my son in the same area. May need to use it on the man! There is a leash law and they are in violation. Oh, the man says the dog is friendly but it doesn't look like it and it sure isn't obedient. Thoughts? And, no I can't avoid the area.
