When we went to Turks and Caicos a few years ago, one of the tourist magazines had an ad where you could adopt a dog and the shelter would make all of the arrangements to get it home with you- including getting it on the plane. They were overrun with stray dogs. The shelters were so overwhelmed that they would actually catch the dog, neuter/spay it and return it to where they found it because there was no space in the shelter.
Adoption promotions that play on peoples' emotions and encourage them to make hasty decisions always worry me. I think people should adopt pets only after giving it a fair amount of consideration about where they live, any changes they foresee in the next few years and what kind of pet will best fit in their households. We live in an area overrun with strays and there are endless posts on FB pet sites with people looking to rehome animals because they're moving and can't afford a place that will take dogs, or they had a baby and the dog is too rough, or they don't have time for it anymore.
So, I hope that these dogs find good homes and I hope the adopters keep up their end of the lifelong commitment.
