Well I am super surprised HOW well the pup did last night. Only up 3 times. PROGRESS. So happy! I will be even happier when I can let him free roam, but he did really well last night! He even went in the crate today ALL by himself and laid down for a nap! WHO HOOOO me!

Good job Crate training is a very good way to potty train. It's only been a week and the pup is making progress. It takes time to settle in and get used to the routine. Give it time and before you know it, he will be trained. Keep up the good work.
Sounds like you are doing everything right. If I recall correctly, when my shepherd was a puppy, she didn't sleep through the night until 12+ weeks. They are changing and developing SO much at that age, its a huge fear imprint period so its entirely possible the puppy is just having a stress response to the crate. Hopefully its a phase that will pass. We've raised and fostered several puppies over the years, some were trained in 3 days, others it took months. Puppies are exhausting; its like having a newborn in the house again! Can you put a frozen stuffed Kong in the crate at night? Patience and consistency, you'll get to the other side.
Thank you. Yes the puppy is sleeping all night now (11pm to 6AM) so that is awesome. Sometimes he will wake up at 3AM/4AM wanting out, and I take him out and he sleeps until around 6AM.
He is doing wonderful on housebreaking and has had very few accidents. In a few months I think he will be ready for free range training so super excited about that.

As you are preparing to let the puppy "free roam", do not lose sight of him being a puppy for a long time. GSDs are in the larger dog category and that means a longer puppyhood. I would not even begin to consider non-crating when not available to monitor (awake and home) until at least 9 months to a year. It isn't for your possessions as much as it is for the dog's safety.
