If a dog is house trained in one house, does it remain house trained when the family moves to a different house?
Or does it need to be retaught where to piss and such?

Depends on the dog and the situation.

Generally, they remember their house training.

However, moving is stressful so there may be some backsliding until they get used to the new setup. Try to keep to the same feeding and elimination schedule in the new house, that will help.

If there was a pet that lived in the "new" house, then they may smell that pet and may want to mark to claim the house as their own.

My experience is most dogs have no problem they know the are not to pee/poop inside and it does not matter who's house they are in.That said years ago my parents were visiting my house and had their two dogs with them as they walked in the male lifted his leg and pee'ed on the wall in the entry way. While my mom was horrified that he did that I think he was just marking and the rest of the weekend he was fine no more leg lifting inside.

In Dec I met a friend from up north up the coast and we spent several days at her nieces very nice vacation home between the two of us there were 4 dogs and there were no accidents inside.

We have moved with dogs and they never had a problem. We had one dog that had never, ever went in the house in her life and we were traveling so had to get a motel room that allowed dogs. She went in sniffing and immediately relieved herself on the carpet where it was obvious, she was not the first. She never did that again.

Also, the neighbor lady told me that Howie had started urinating on the back porch and she had it with him and he might have to go because she didn't know why he was doing that. I later remembered that their son had visited with a small nasty tempered dog that was kept out on the porch. I spoke with the neighbor and asked if it was possible that the visiting dog had soiled the rug and now Howie was just overmarking. Never heard another complaint about Howie.

Dog do mark over where other dogs have gone and, frankly, you don't want to live in a place like that.

Since Katies is trained to go on paper in a certain area I make sure she knows where it is. I take her to the area say go potty & praise. She also knows to go on paper outside stores & she know how to tell me when she needs to Exit! I don't think it Fair to a dog not to at least be introduced to the Proper place when moving. Esp if you rather they didn't just Go Anywhere in the yard! My GF moved into her new home she went outside with her sheltie took her to a bush in the corner of the yard & enforced the Where to go training! Rest of the yard stayed Clean!

Some dogs generalize and to them any house counts as a house. Other dogs learn where to potty just for a specific house.

When you move or visit a new place, watch the dog carefully until he learns how to get outside and where he is supposed to go to relieve himself.

My dog always remembered. You just need to take them to the door and show them around the yard.

It depends. If the prior owner had a dog or dogs, your dog may backslide a bit to "claim" it's territory.
