My puppy since she was young would get nasty brown gunk in her ears daily. Since she eats limited variety of food, I cut out one thing at a time without improvement. She is now 9 months and has very clean ears. Most if not all of the food I gave her when she was younger have been reintroduced her and she still eats the same brand of kibble. I read that the brown gunk usually is a sign of food allergy so I am wondering how her ears just cleared up like that. I don't know if this is related but now she gets horrible eye gunk in the morning. I am using artificial tears which has helped but not cured the problem and we are probably going to make a vet appointment soon.
