The owner of two pit bulls that attacked and seriously injured a Maryville animal control officer Thursday, spoke out Friday, saying her dogs were only trying to protect her.

“From my heart, my dogs are not bad dogs,” Deborah Kay Dyer said Friday. “They were just protecting me.”

Dyer had just attended a Blount County General Sessions Court hearing for her boyfriend, Brian Ray Willis, who has been charged with allowing the dogs to be at large during a previous incident. Willis is in custody at the Blount County Jail on an unrelated charge.
