I got my first dog from a shelter almost 3 years ago and the second one 2.5 years ago. I've never been away from them a whole day. I dread if I ever have to. The second one is very drawn to me and since he was mistreated before I got him and I treat him so well he gets upset if I have to leave him at a friends house for a few hours. Even at the motel on a road trip while I was getting the bags out he thought he was being abandoned as well as when I got to my father's house and I had to get things out of the car. He starts scratching the door to try to get to me, poor thing.
Adopted Millie three years ago and have never been away from her a whole day. She is very attached to me and is scared of many different things....wind, thunder, lightning, firecrackers, some people, night time and she has some stomach issues that happen and makes her lick everything! I could not leave her because I would worry all the time, especially if her stomach issues acted up which is at least once a month. The only time I leave her for a couple hours is if I have some errands to do.

I can and have left my guys for up to 10 hours alone and they are fine unless there is a thunderstorm. But one of them is so attached to me I worry that he will think he's being abandoned if I ever have to leave him with someone.
The longest I've been away from my 2 has been 2 weeks when I've gone overseas for vacation. I leave them with a dog sitter who keeps them in his home and they have the run of the house. The first time I left them I just hated doing it, but when he dropped them back to me, they made a beeline for their chair and just sat there, like they'd just been out for a walk!
I've left hank behind for 3 months once and when I returned, he was more upset I came back than how long I was gone. To be honest, I don't even think he knows I own the dang property. I'm sure he was somewhat happy to see me because he did give me a lick and wagged his tail, but 3 seconds later, he farted and walked out the door.
I had to be out of state this summer and couldnt find a rental that would allow my dog (although the rental ended up having a dog, mine wasnt allowed) so, she spent the summer -3 months - at my partners house- I am just lucky I had that option because the situation wasnt one I could avoid (being away for 3 months)- I did visit her once over this period, but I am just glad its over!
