I say not just puppies but even my elderly dogs loved it when I talked baby talk to them.

Cats not so much!

My Catahoula could not give a crap - he doesn't care about my tone at all but pays attention to my actual words over tone, which is unusual for a dog (and kind of scary). My kelpie though... he just wants to be babied. He loves baby talk and snuggles and smooches. Any of those things will have him writhing with delight. He was quarantined for several weeks as a puppy due to paarvo, and I think that has something to do with it.

When we're working together for our various dog sports, I have to read the kelpie's mood and try to figure out what he's feeling like that day. Sometimes it's a treat that gets his attention and sometimes, after he does a good job, he just wants me to pick him up and hold him like a baby. I'm not kidding.

Your dogs may have loved it, but any human within earshot was getting ready to puke.

I have to admit my husband rolls his eyes and turns away. I keep telling him pets are cheaper than more babies!

Like I care!

My dog's gone more than half deaf, so I doubt she hears my words much. But she knows.

The Genuine Little Princess would look at me like I am a peon who forgot my place. She would gird herself in her dignity and stomp away until I regained my senses.

I notice that Pensive will stay and get cuddled for a longer time period is I simply shut up and concentrate on the scratching and massaging. Her attention span for voice is rather limited. Not that she doesn't like to be praised.

Wyatt McRiot doesn't care what the attention is or how it is delivered. Kick him around the room with steel toed boots, gooshy baby talk him, rub him, thump on his ribs, hang him upside down, yell at him, tickle his armpits, scratch his back...he doesn't care. It is all attention and he wants it all, for as long and for however it is delivered. Any attention is good attention.

Darryl doesn't care one way or the other as long as I will let him sit on my lap. I don't have to talk to him or pet him as long as he is allowed to perch on my knee.

lol. There isn't a hanky or safe room big enough for someone who is negatively affected by someone who talks baby-talk to their dog. Thanks for the laugh!
