This is just a fantastic story. We went through the same thing here and the companion cocker spaniel never recovered from the loss of the first dog when she was hit by a truck. The cocker spent the next 17 years just miserable and wouldn't take to another dog. She was only less than a year old when it happened and her Tigger bounce just disappeared.

That's what I did for my kelpie - it's worked out great. I didn't get him a foster though - just s permanent friend. He's so much happier! Kittens are awesome!
