My mother never got our chihuahua spayed. She is now 14 years old and needs to go under to have a tooth removed. The vet wants to spay her while she is under, but my mom is not sure what to do because the dog is so old. She doesn't seem to have any other health issues - is it a good idea/worth the money to go through with it at this age?
Thanks!!

I would also get a 2nd opinion. Many years ago when I worked for a vet, he would never have spayed a dog that age. If the techniques have changed, or if the dog routinely has litters maybe there's a good reason to do it.
Vets' opinions vary on spaying/neutering older animals. The Humane Society recommends it as long as the dog is physically healthy despite an advanced age. There's still health benefits of spaying older dogs; the risk of cancers is decreased.
Your vet should order a complete blood panel to make sure that your dog is healthy enough to safely undergo surgery. The blood test checks for anemia, kidney or liver disease, infection, and blood glucose levels, conditions that might not be evident through physical exam alone.
I have a 14 year old yorkie. I never had her spayed. She has numerous health problems including kidney issues. Her white count is up and the vet told me to have her spayed and all her health issues would go away. Including her anemia. She’s been on prednisone for years. When they try to lower it her levels dip
I think it's nuts. The dog is too old. Given the breed, it's very unlikely the dog even leaves the house.
You’ll be surprised how many older animals and even women have the ability to give birth. If they however decide to have the dog fixed, then that should be the owner’s decision.
