Can anyone recommend a good pair of nail trimmers for a big dog? I have a Saint Bernard and the regular ones in Petsmart just aren't strong enough to cut through her nails completely which means I end up partly breaking her nail instead of having a clean cut. Or is there another tool to trim her nails? When its cool, she takes lots of walks so her nails naturally wear down, but now its been so hot that she can't handle long walks. Thanks.
Take her to a groomer they don't charge that much..It maybe you are not strong enough, but they can show you how. What brand name is the clipper? Style?
We are a mastiff family, and I know what a hassle it can be.

I did it once or twice, but the noise scared my dog. Plus the dremel can get kind of hot.
So I just used the biggest clippers I could find.
Where we live, the sand and the sidewalks seem to wear down my dogs nails enough, but my female always tended to have longer nails (how appropriate.)
I usually would end up taking her to the vet because he did such a quick, professional job, instead of agonizing about it the way I did.

Thanks for your responses. My dog is a huge baby--and she's old for a saint so the groomer thing really stresses her out. She's also nervous at the vet's office. I know, I know, yeah, she's a pampered pooch. Not to mention she doesn't like other people touching her paws. I've heard of the dremel, but I know it would scare her--thanks for the suggestion, though. Like I said, usually she's able to walk and wear them down naturally. But at her age, the heat is really starting to get to her.
Cleosmom, do you know where I can get the Millers Forge? I'll do a search and see if I can find them. I don't know the name/brand of what I have now. I just got them off the rack and they said for big dogs, but you know how that goes

I ran a Google and found them on Petco's website. You want to make certain you get the ones for Large dogs

Ha ha, you sound like me. I file my guys down. Not working very good. I could NEVER use a clipper! Their flesh is so far down. Guess they are going to get a dog-icure tonight. Party being them!

I would recommend looking for clippers with a nail guard. When the guard is in position and used properly it will only let you trim a small amount of nail and minimize you from quicking the nail which can get messy. If your pooch has light colored nails you can see the quick and trimming is easy. If his nails are dark I would suggest trimmimg in small bits. Don't forget the dew claws. Keep a jar of Kwik Stop handy in case you do cut too deep. Like another poster said you may be better having the vet do it. I wouldn't want to wrestle with a Saint Bernard who didn't wan't his nails touched. I personally use a pair I bought from morrco.com pet supply. Just do an internet search for large dog nail trimmers. You'll get hundreds of hits. Good luck to you.
