It does make me sick to know that this is allowed. I don't remember the specifics, but there was some sort of political reason why they aren't shut down, and I think a connection to the Waltons (of WalMart) in Arkansas, where most of them are located.

I was shocked to learn (apparently an ABC program, NightLine if I recall correctly, did a segment this past summer where they went to one) that the Amish "communities" called "Lancaster" in both PA and Ohio are the biggest in the entire country.
They are "protected" due to their religion, or cult(??), or whatever it is. Apparently nobody, i.e. the Law, can touch them.
I cried trough most of the program. sick, sick, sick. There were so many horrible things, but the one that I remember the most is the one older dog that had never step foot on grass or the ground for that matter, he had never been let out of his cage...
Makes me sick and angry all over again. I live pretty close to some Amish, just a few miles, have never seen this, but hate driving by and seeing the cows and goats, without any shelter, they all huddle togeather trying to stay somewhat dry.. I know they are cows, but at least let them live some of there life unmiserable.. Oh here I go, I can't even kill a spider, I take them outside, one big softy.....
I was involved with the dog rescue operation of a mill that was being shut down. That suffering was something I could have gone my whole life without seeing personally. I'm not a violent person but when the "owner" was being lead away in handcuffs it took everything in me not to launch myself on him and beat him senseless. My Choco Lab, Bandit, was a rescue from a Lancaster Pa puppy mill. He was used as a breeder till he was almost 7 years old. I can't tell you how long it took to work through his issues, both medical and social. Some things I know we will never fully resolve. I still almost cry when I see joy he gets from contently laying in our yard with his nose in the breeze.
If anyone is organizing on a national level to put a stop to these operations, count me in! I'll do everything I can to help!
I never cease to be shocked by the levels of depravity that humans can sink to. I have not seen the special but my sister works for the Humane Society in her city and they are constantly taking in seized animals from puppy mills. Dogs missing teeth, inbred puppies that will have problems for life, emaciated breeders... The sad upside is that the ones that are ok get adopted out quickly because everyone wants a purebred dog. They adopt at a higher fee to help cover for the mutts that take longer to find a loving family.
