What would be the best dog breed for a senior that insists on having a pure bred dog no matter what you tell them? They need a dog that is hypoallergenic too. Don't suggest a stuffed animal because that was already suggested, LOL! And yes they have heard no dog is hypoallergenic but dealing with hard headed senior so trying to be patient any suggestions for good breeds will help. The mobility at this time is walking about half to one hour possibly more and can bend down to pick up dog poop.
Black labs are nice and friendly for people of any age.
If you are in Georgia, you have probably seen "Carolina Dogs" and probably just thought they were some sort of Shepherd mix. If you can get one young or already used to living with people, they make terrific pets.
Never heard of Carolina dog. I will look into it. The poodle and bichon I think need grooming which is too much for the senior but the carolina dog sounds interesting. Do they shed much? Yes, they have about a 3/4 acre but need to get it fenced for a dog. Thanks for the suggestions!
Thank you for the pooper scooper suggestion I think it will help them with the bending which is great. I know poodles are smart but the grooming cost is difficult for them and the bichon also needs grooming. Not sure about the Havanese? I have never seen one in person so not sure if grooming is needed for them. Thanks for breed suggestions.
Labs are wonderful dogs. I know that they shed though and I am not sure it will be the right breed for the senior. We had acquaintances with two labs and they shed those small bristly kind of hairs all over the place and unfortunately I don't think the breed will work because of that sadly.
I have a lab. Best friend our family could have, but sheds incessantly and also is pretty high energy. Grooming of some sort will be required for any dog.
We had a Lab until cancer took her. Amazing dog! The shedding was more than I could have imagined. Daily coat maintenance helped but don't think that because a Lab doesn't need a hair cut to keep the fur out of their eyes that they don't need grooming.
Your breeds that are geared towards folks with allergies are going to need to be groomed. So your Yorkies, Poodles, Maltese, Bichons are up that alley.
There are always exceptions, either on the dog or on the human, but I think most seniors are going to be better off with a dog on the smaller side... say up to 45lb. If you get a dog who's 75-100lb, young and strong and pulls like a tow-truck on the leash, someone could get hurt.
