With our last rescue, it was very easy to determine what his breed mix was (schnauzer/poodle).

We said goodbye to him last November, and adopted another mutt about 6 weeks ago. (Not a covid-I'm-bored-rescue. We had been looking and filling out applications with 4-5 rescue groups for about a month.)

This girl's breeding is difficult to impossible to tell just by looking at her. Even the vet and the rescue group is stumped. Obviously, there's an inherent curiosity for us to learn her breed mix, but there's also personality traits that TEND to be breed specific. I'd like to figure out if any of those traits can be utilized as part of her training. (We did that with the poodle side of our last dog.)

So - has anybody ever purchased one of those doggy DNA kits? What did you think of it?

We've done Wisdom Panel and Embark (different dogs). I like getting them done for rescues, especially. The Embark one includes health information - predisposition for certain diseases, etc. - which can be helpful.

Here are some other threads to peruse until more people chime in. Enjoy your new rescue!!

Years ago I did Wisdom panel on Jazz and was not impressed as they could not find anything except distant breeds from Grandparents but the tests were pretty new at the time so their data bases were not as good. I thought oh I will never spend the money to do this again.

But the tests have come a long way since then so I did Chaos with Embark and I will say the only two breeds that shocked me were the rat Terrier and the Rotti. The fact the highest percentages were rat terrier and APBT was a bit shocking too but I always figured the APBT was in there but expected Aussie and Cattle dog to be higher percentages then APBT. I am happy I did it as she also tested as MDR1 sensitive which could explain why she vomited during anesthesia to have a tooth pulled . Now we know to be careful with certain drugs.

I did do Embark on My Silken Windhound, Dazzle too but that was for the health info so it could be put in the Silken Windhound data base so perhaps help pin point issues when they do start showing up in the breed. When he died from osteosarcoma I did notify Embark so they put that in the data base too.

I will probably do the same for my Silken Windhound Puppy Zephyr and hope his health report comes back clean like Dazzles did. But I do think with purebred dogs creating a health data base can help keep the breeds healthier and that notifying Embark when something like cancer shows up in a dog may one day help them pinpoint if there is any genetic component to it.

Below is Texas Chaos and her breed results.

I posted a thread on this a while back. I did a Wisdom Panel on a dog I adopted last fall. I got him from a Breed specific rescue for Shiba Inus and he as said to be half Shiba and half Pomeranian or Chihuahua. He had been rescued from a back yard breeder/hoarder situation.

His results came back 75% Pomeranian 25% chihuahua.

Still a great little dog.
