Did someone say that? I use those too. Hope they're working.

They can help keep the dog's teeth cleaner. Effective preventive dental care is multi-faceted. Dental treats on their own may not be enough, especially if your dog doesn't take the time to chew them thoroughly. Many dogs just reduce them to a few larger chunks and swallow. BTDT. If you think a harder treat will slow the dog down and force it to chew longer, consider that very hard treats can cause wear to the teeth. One of my previous dogs was a serious chewer and just inhaled most dental treats. Bully sticks and Himalayan cheese chews helped, but eventually her teeth were too worn to tolerate them.

Our dogs' teeth are cleaned about every 18 months and the cleanings include X-rays to make sure nothing bad is going on below the surface. Over the years, they've required a few extractions as they've gotten older and since they can't tell us when they're hurting, I feel it's on us to be proactive.

When we moved and changed vets I learned something very valuable from our new vet. Our old, frail gal had diabetes that was extremely hard to control and both vets said that it was too risky to put her under sedation for a cleaning. The diabetes made her prone to having more bacteria in her mouth so our new vet put her on a low dose antibiotic to keep the bacteria levels down.

February is National Pet Teeth Cleaning month and most vets run specials on cleanings. I have found that if for some reason I missed the month, our vet always honored the special pricing.

We use Entadent, a leave-on chicken-flavored toothpaste (smells awful), a few times a week before bed. At our dog's last visit, the vet said he might need a dental in the next 6-12 months (he's an almost 6-year-old Boston terrier). We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, but in the meantime, the vet said that he's teeth are generally good.

I get mine done about every 2 years. Poodles have notorious bad teeth issues tartar/periodontal. It is very expensive. First they need a full exam and blood work which is ~$300. Then the procedure itself runs $700+
