There's a reason that many continental pointing breeds, like Brittany's, Viszlas, GSP's, GWP's, Weimareiners, etc, have their tails docked. It ends up becoming a long term problem when they don't, especially fi they are hunted.

And you don't have to dock super short. Leaving 50-60% of the length is short enough. THe German club guidelines specify that the tail should be left long enough for the dog to cover it's gentals.
When docked as pups their Tail bones haven't grown together. As adults they have to Cut between the vertebra, nerves.

Isn’t there also a balance issue? When they’re docked as puppies, they’s just learning how to use their bodies, learning to walk etc. But as an adult, that tail is a full on appendage that helps them balance to walk, run, swim.

No, he'll be fine. Dogs adapt fast. Quite honestly, even if docked as an adult, the dog doesn't seem to notice any difference.

It is major surgery to remove an adult dog's tail, so he will need some after care.

When tails are docked as puppies, before 4-5 days, there are no nerves connected in the tail and tails can be cut off without anesthetic and the pup won't even squeak; they can't feel it. One stitch ( or a drop of surgical glue) and they are good to go.

Adult tail surgery is more serious, but the vet at that shelter has recommended surgery, so it is not something the shelter is doing on a whim, just because they love to spend lots of money and redecorate their dogs. This dog needs to have it done.

I am not sure if they have docked it or not. They have not said. They continue to try to find a home for her, but the shelter operates like a rescue (they are looking for an ideal home, which we would not be in their eyes), so it may take a long time to place her. They have been sending some dogs to the neighboring town, where it is a same day adoption after approval of the application, and those dogs are placed in less than a week. I do hope they transfer her.

I will update if I see any info, or if she is transferred. If transferred, they will take a lot of pictures when they post her. They do such a good job at the other shelter.
