I wanted to share some puppy tales with everyone. I think too many people do not understand what the letters ACK mean and when they see AKC they THINK they are getting a good guality puppy.

AKC is just a registry and like any business it is to make money and it makes money by registering dogs. The more dogs that get that AKC papers the more money. I think it is a total shame that they do not make breeders more responsible and stop issuing papers to breeders that are not putting health and temperment first in the puppies they breed. ( besides that they run agility events that do not alow mutts to enter which I don't understand as the dog is not being judged by breed standards in agility, ACK snobs!)

I will start by the tale of a Golden that belonged to a doctor I work with he is a very intelligent man. Years ago at a party hosted at his house he told a group of us the tale of his Golden. As a very young dog she developed problems with her hips and they took her to see a specialist that was out of town. The vet told them she had such severe hip dysplasia that the kind thing to do would be to just put her down. He and his wife could not do that and he said they both cried the whole way home even got pulled over by the cops for speeding but got out of the ticket when the cop heard the sad story! He then said we just do not get it she was AKC! Side note, they did the best they could for her for many years but when I met them at the park when she was about 4 it was very sad as she wanted to run and play but would fall down and the doctor would go lay with her and talk to her until he could get her back up...broke my heart. I did explain to him that AKC does not guarantee a healthy puppy. Like too many others he saw that AKC was some sort of guarantee that he was getting a healty good quality dog.

Now I will move on to the photos. Bruce the Bulldog puppy. Cute, No? who would not love that mug? By the way he is ACK He belongs to my brother and his family. They saw him on a " breeders"? website and that nice man offered to bring him down to a meeting place to save them a drive..what a nice guy They bought him for their 19 year old son, never having met the parents and despite my warning. Puppy love makes one do stupid things! I think the guy that sold him is a puppy broker but really do not know but the fact he was so " nice" bringing the puppy to them thus not wanting them to see the parents sends off warning flags to me.

Bruce is now a year old and he is a sweetie and yes he is a nice looking bulldog aand everyone loves him so much but he has ended up costing them thousands of dollars in vet bills. One of his big issues is his eyelashes grow inward and have caused ulcers on his eyes so he has had expensive surgeries to try to correct that and it keeps cropping up so for now he runs around with staples holding his eye lids back. This a genetic problem and could have been prevented by proper breeding. For awhile they thought he had mega-esophagus and that ran up expensive vet bills but seems to be under control and may not be that. Do they love Bruce, you bet. Would they return him, no way but poor Bruce has paid a price for bad breeding and they have paid mega bucks for the same

Next come the two photos of the aussie pups, the upside down one is Albie and he is deaf with slight vision issues, the one with some color is Marco he is deaf and blind , might see shadows but for all purposes blind. The white one with him is Mad Max, deaf but he does have vision. The three are from the same litter there were two more in the litter blind and deaf. They were bred by some breeder that finds it acceptable to breed merle coated dogs too merle coated dogs. This can create homozygous merles that are usually deaf and often blind or both. When you do the genetics 1 out of 4 from such a breeding will be homozygous but that is a stastic and in this litter I heard there were 10 puppies and guess what? FIVE were homozygous merles! The breeder does sell ACK puppies and pays someone to drown the defective puppies but some are so unethical they do sell them to people that do not know better. The new puppy owner sees AKC buys puppy , Puppy will not listen and they find it impossible to train so puppy gets dumped on the side of a road or at a shelter. Hey puppy was deaf that is why he did not listen. He is not stubborn or stupid he just did not hear you . They can be trained and make wonderful pets but it is sad that any puppy has to live with handicaps because some breeder is so greedy for money. Merle to Merle breeding should be against the law!

These 5 were rescued by the breeders neighbor that learned they at 5 weeks were to be drowned. My mom and I got involed in fostering them and a friend and I drove them to Aussielads in Arizona which at the time was doing rescue work with them, now Amazing Aussie has taken over. Yes they all got homes but my favorite not in the photos who was blind and deaf but so amazing died a few weeks after his family took him and the vet felt it was some other defect from the breeding. Left two adults and two small boys and all of us that had met the puppy heart broken.Have to really admire those parents getting such a handicapped puppy and teaching their sons that despite his being blind and deaf he was just as good as any other puppy.

Last but not least and dear to my heart is the beautiful Phoenix. Have you ever seen such a beautiful coat and markings? She is my dog that lives with my dad as my Jazz would not leave her alone. She just could not understand that the beautiful Phoenix was not challenging her when she would stare at her. No the beautiful Phoenix was trying to figure out what that thing coming at her was, as you see she too has very limited vision and she is deaf. She is believed to be an aussie from a merle to merle breeding but no one will know for sure as her previous owners found her wandering down a road out in the county, no homes around. They presumed she was dumped so took her home and gave her a home but after 1.5 years they too dumped her at the humane society. She was very shy and afraid of everything and everyone when I met her. For some reason she did come right up to me and our love affair began.I struggled with the idea of adding her to my pack as she just tore at my heart strings. After finding Aussis lads and seeking advice from them and working with her with my two dogs she became a part of my family and now keeps my dad company. She is a fantastic dog and has come so far. Best temperment ever. Yes she knows tricks and can show them off with the best of them. She is a love bug . I can't help but wonder what an amazing dog she would have been if she could hear and see as if she is so great with these issues wow she could have been the greatesst american dog or not maybe these issues are what makes her the way she is?

My tales have alot of happy endings but there is often alot of heartache and alot of expense when one adopts with out seeing the parents and adopts with the belief that ACK means quality. I really wish it did but look that these photos these guys all live with defects because there are breeders out there that just want the money so do not care about the breed.Somer even do not know better as I have met people that breed dogs with merle coats that do not know what A homozygous merle is. If you are going to breed be responsible and learn about genetics before you do. If you are buying a puppy from a breeder try to find out as much as you can and try to meet the parents don't just fall for a photo of a cute puppy as that is not fair to you or the puppy and it just allows these idiots to keep breeding as you are supporting them to do so. There are plenty of good responsible breeders out there so take your time to find one. You and your pocket book will be glad you did.Remember most responsible breeders do not sell puppies to pet stores as they want to ensure the puppy gets a great home so they really do grill perspective owners. If someone is willing to sell you a puppy with very little questions asked because you are willing to write check run the other way or be prepaired for heartbreak and empty bank accounts it is your choice.. Just don't be so blinded by puppy love.

Very sad stories. It's disgusting what these "breeders" will do just to pump out puppies. I've never heard of this homozygous merle issue. Is it breed specific? Boxers are my thing and they have enough inheritable issues without this problem too.

Homozygous merles can occur in any breed that has a merle coat( if you do not know merle is a coat color, Phoenix is a blue merle) and there are quite a few that do. In a nutshell the merle gene is actually a defective gene and carries other defects on it ( blindness being one). If you breed two merle coated dogs the puppies have a 1 in 4 chance of getting that defective gene from both parents and if they do they will have the defects. This is not to say if you have 4 puppies one will be homozygous as any number of them including all or none could be. Look at the litter of 10 one half were. One in four is the chance. The deafness comes in the fact that Homozygous merles tend to have way too much white in their coat ( but not always) which is a good indicator that they are homozygous. The deafness is usually related to the fact that the hairs in the ears are white thus missing pigment and that causes the deafness which is why white boxers and dalmations are often deaf.

If you breed a merle to a solid or tri coat the puppy can still get a defective gene from the merle parent but it will have a good gene from the other parent and not be effected. It is like humans and the CF gene where Both parents must be carriers to pass the gene on and have a child with CF.

Knowing this you may ask why would people breed merle to merle? Greed as they are after the merle coat and may not get it when they breed a solid or tri to a merle. Who ever bred Phoenix did get a beautiful dog but look at the cost she lives in a silent, fuzzy maybe even dark word.

People comment on how beautiful she is then they see her blue messed up eyes and they scrunch up their faces and say what weird eyes she has.She has smaller eyes then normal one is ecentric meaning the pupil is not centered hers sits close to the lower lid and it is a starburst pupil so does not close down in bright light, her other eye is hypoplastic where a piece of the iris is missing and that eye contains a big coloboma and it too is ecentric . Weird looking eyes that probably have a very limited vision but she does see and she does fine so don't feel too sorry for her as she is living the goodlife! She has a job taking care of my dad and his cat and she is a very happy dog

A year ago we had her in the Big dog parade dressed as Goofy ( my other two were Mickey Mouse and Minnie ) I must say with her weird eyes and her happy somewhat stupid looking grin ..no doubt who she was.She made the perfect Goofy

Great post Dashdog, thanks for putting the time in to help those who want to become educated before they buy .

It doesn't take much to learn how to recognize a reputable breeder from the non-reputable masses of backyard breeders .

Thanks for sharing that. People need to be educated about good breeders, puppy mills and backyard breeders.

I Am Famous Now
I was born today. One of 10. My Daddy is very famous. I have lots of half brothers and sisters. My Mother is very famous. Since she got famous, she has only had puppies. No more loving hands, no more fun trips... just puppies. She is always sad when they leave her.
I left home today. I didn't want to go, so I hid behind my mama and my 3 litter mates that were left. I didn't like you. But one day they said I would be famous. I wonder, is famous the same as fun and good times? So you picked me up and carried me away, even though you were concerned about me hiding from you. I don't think you like me.

My new home is far away. I am scared and afraid. My heart says BE BRAVE. My ancestors were. Did they go to good homes like mine? I'm hungry because I can't eat too much because it will be bad for my bones. I can't bite and snap when the children are mean to me. I just run and play and pretend I am in a big green field with butterflies and robins and frogs.

I can't understand why they kick me. I am quiet, but the man hits and says loud things. The lady doesn't feed me good things like I had with my mother. She just throws dry food on the ground, then goes away before I can get too close for touching and petting. Sometimes my food smells bad but I eat it anyway.

Today I had 10 puppies. They are so wonderful and warm. Am I famous now? I wish I could play with them, but they are so tiny. I am so young and playful that it is hard to lay here in this hole under the house nursing my puppies. They are crying now. I am so hungry. I scratch and worry my fur. I wish someone would throw me some food. I am also very thirsty. I now have 8. 2 got cold during the night and I couldn't make them warm again. They are gone. We are all very weak. Maybe if I take them out on the porch, we can get some food.

Today they took us away. It was too much trouble to feed us and someone came to take us away. Someone grabbed my puppies, they were crying and whimpering. We were put in a truck with boxes in it. Are my babies famous now? I hope so, because I miss them. They are gone.
The place smelled of urine, fear and sickness. Why was I here? I was beautiful, like my ancestors. Now I am hungry, dirty, in pain and unwanted. Maybe the worst is unwanted. No one came though I tried to be good.

Today someone came. They put a rope around my neck and led me to a room that was very clean and had a shiny table. They put me on the table. Someone hugged me. It felt so good!! Then I felt tired and laid over the last one who cared. I AM FAMOUS NOW. Today someone cared.
