Calling all Pug people!

My brother & his girlfriend recently got a male Pug puppy, and he's just the cutest thing... but I know Pugs have some health issues, so I'm hoping to get a little info to pass along. He comes from a breeder in San Diego, but I don't know the details (I plan to ask), and I'm sure they plan to neuter him. Is there anything they should watch out for, or preventative care you'd recommend? They also have an 8 year-old cat, who's tolerating him alright so far, but are Pugs usually good with cats? Anyway, just thought I'd ask the "experts" here for some words of wisdom! Here are a few pictures of the little guy:

I absolutely LOVE Pugs although I have never had one. I can't think of a more adorable face. I would have to kiss his little face daily. He is just adorable and I hope they have a great time with them.

When my daughter and I are out and see Pugs, we always stop to talk. They are like little clowns.

He's adorable and already has his own cell phone I see

One of the main things for your brother to know is due to their facial structure being compressed (brachycephalic), they tend not to handle temperature extremes well at all. So they need to be carefully watched in both summer and winter. Again due to being brachycephalic they are at a higher risk of having an elongated pallette which can be correct via laser surgery to aid their breathing.

They shed, shed and shed even more.

Enjoy the littel guy

Our boy Louis is 1.6 years old. Here are a few things:

1) Be careful with the eyes.
2) They snore. The vet should tell you if he is going to have any problems.
3) They shed and unbelievable amount.
4) Keep the wrinkle clean
5) Keep the ears clean - they can get yeast infections and have major ear issues.
6) get ready for the sweetest animal ever.
7) We have a cat also and they get along great and play together.

Good luck.

Luckily they live in San Diego, where the temperature is fairly mild and constant... but it can occasionally get hot in the summer, so I'll tell them what you said. As for the shedding, my brother is a total neat-freak, so his vacuum will be getting lots of use now.

Thanks to both of you for the advice!

Oh he's adorable, what a cutie, all those wrinkles! You got some good answers, would just like to stress being careful w/ the heat (maybe b/c where we live it's almost unbearable today), once he gets a bit older and finishes his vaccs, they may want to join a meetup group (meetup.com, they'd put in their zip code), they are great for pugs and people alike to socialize and have fun - best wishes w/ your new nephew - enjoy!

YEAH! Another pug lover in the world my philosophy in life is that the world will be a better place if everyone has a pug!

I have an 8 year old pug. she is an absolute clown. they LOVE to show off and get attention. Rosie likes it when i put clothes on her....she prances around all proud.

I use some stuff from the vet called malacetic to clean her wrinkle. it gets bad pretty quickly. i have used baby wipes in the past as well, but i like the malacetic wipes better.

much agreed about the ear infections....rosie gets chronic ear infections. we have a jumbo sized bottle of ear cleaner from the vet, as long as we keep them clean, she is good. i have found though that she is allergic to alot of things and ear infections (and even wrinkle infections, so watch out for those) are a sign that they are having allergies and may need to be checked out.

pugs are such snuggle bunnies. your pix are adorable! enjoy the new baby!

Pugs are awesome! Did your brother give him a goofy name like "Snuffy?" I had a friend who did that once. I called her "Princess." She was a doll and lived a good life.

Holy cow. I have seen some cute pug pix before, but those are right up there at the top, especially that coy reclining-on-the-couch one.
Don't forget your Pug Screen Cleaner
