Our rescue Bichon had his birthday yesterday (2 years). I gave him treats which he ate happily. Today I gave him a steak. His birthday present will probably be a Halloween costume.
I just give them a treat that they normally do not get, like a beef marrow or special gourmet dog treat. Otherwise, they might get a new toy "wrapped" in a cardboard box that they can destroy.
All of mine are rescues so we don't know their birthdays. In fact, we don't really know exactly how old two of them are. They get special meals any day that we have a special meal, so they really like holidays and when we have a party they are very excited.
I wish I knew my dogs birthday. I got her from the pound and they guessed her age at around 2 1/2 years at the time. However, at Christmas time she gets lots of presents (treats, toys, etc.) from her human "aunts, uncles and grandma".
Since Simon came from a rescue at the age of 6, we don't know when his birthday is. However, he gets a celebration everyday because someone always brings him a burger daily.
A lot of us are in the same boat,I don't know the birthdays of my dogs either.
We've always assigned holidays as our dogs' birthdays. We try to guess, if at all possible, when they may have been born and assign the nearest holiday. Mainly, this makes it easier for us to remember how old they are .
We don't do anything special except tell them "You're 3 years old today!", or what have you.
They don't know the difference .
