Sounds like you are getting very good vet care. Once she is off the meds completely, wait to see if the behaviour starts up again.

The stools have been mush so I called the vet and he did another stool test. Apparantly he can't find anything so thinks it's a food allergy. I can't change her food a fourth time. In a month I changed it three. From the breeder's junk, to Purina, then was told to get off that and went on canidae. She loves it to death, but her stools are soft. Does it take more than a week or so for her to get used to it?

I sswitched over a week's time, now she's on it entirely for a week. Does it take longer? Someone said the good food is hard for them to get used to.

She is off the meds and now itching and biting her legs again. Don't know if it's food or outside allergy. I am almost swsitched to the new allergy food and watch, it has nothing to do with it.

I would recommend that you revisit the vet and see if they can pinpoint exactly what is causing the allergy.

On the cortisone treatment she stopped stratching in a few days, but then after slowly going off the pills she is now right back to it again. She's only a year old, I can't keep giving her cortisone, can I? I still have pills left, don't know if I should start up again.

Have you tried giving your baby a bath with medicated oatmeal? You can also give them antihistamine. My one dog was doing the scratching and biting all the time...like you, no fleas...and the vet suggested an antihistamine. Of course, it would be the child dosage.

If you mean benedryl, I have tried it, but he told me only 1/4 of a 25mg pill and it does nothing.

How much does your dog weigh? Mine was just under 30 pounds, and I was told to give her one pill, which did help

Not that I'm pushing raw feeding, but I switched when I saw the results it had on some dogs and they had switched because of itching also. Seems the kibbled foods cause a lot of dogs to itch.
Did the itching start when you started the furnace because of the colder temps? Or maybe the fireplace - a fireplace always dries the air quite a bit.
I know some dog owners swear by coal tar shampoo for itchy dogs - have never tried it myself since my dogs don't scratch or itch.

I've been giving her 1/4 benedryl which I don't think is enough, she is 11 1/2 lbs. It has worked a little, not like the cortisone, but don't want to continue that cortisone. How long can you continue the benedryl? Is it safe to use all the time? They say one mg for every lb. I have the 25 mg pills and have to cut them in 4. It's hard.
