I have a new dog, she is a year old and has never been on any meds. I had the heartworm test done so can start on heartguard but was wondering in the cold weather if I need the frontline plus. Are they both tick meds??? Do you leave it go for the winter??? I havent started yet.

Heartgard is not for fleas and ticks, it is for heartworms which are transmitted by mosquitos, so most northern states don't require that it be used in the winter months because mosquitos are not around. Same goes for ticks and fleas in the winter months, but the problem can come up if you have had eggs layed in your house that haven't hatched, since your house stays toasty in the winter there is a slight possibility. I personally don't use frontline any more at all unless I am heading up north in the summer months as we do not have a flea and tick problem in our area here (I think they spray so much for bugs in our neighborhood that nothing really lives here any more) When we lived in Wisconsin, I stopped all meds for the winter months. I think it's kind of personal preference, some people are against the chemicals and stuff and I see that point for sure, but some people are compliant to what their vet recommends and I think that's fine too.

Good luck with the new puppy.

Depends where in Jersey you live. If you have deer in your backyard I would use it once a month in the summer. I never had a flea or tick problem with any of my dogs back in Jersey. Never used Frontline once there. You do not need it during the winter. I would say depending where you live use it July, Aug. and Sept. or until the first frost. I also get mine from someone at an online site. I save a ton of money. It is like half the price.

I use Heartguard year-around and I live in inland Mass. Any warm day, any time of the year, and you will see mosquitos. Also, if you stop and start the Heartguard, I think you'd have to have a heartworm test each time before resuming the medication.
I use Frontline starting around April into October. I've seen almost no ticks this year, but then, haven't been taking the dogs into the woods this year. I have seen ticks as early as April, though.

I live in CT and actually confirmed this exact issue with my vet.

Heartguard -- definitely all year, every month

Frontline (I use Avantix) -- only during the warm months; starting April 1, last application October 1. No need for November through March.

After the first frost you can stop with the Frontline. But Heartguard is ALL YEAR ROUND!

I also use Frontline Plus and for some reason this year the fleas are bad! I hadn't noticed this in past years but here we are in November and I am still applying frontline. I hope the cold weather stays with us.

We had ticks up here in Vermont as of last week when I picked one off the dog! Today we had a very hard frost and hopefully these things are finally dead.
