Why do dogs need "something" to lay on? (biting, clean)

Poor Lucy. Her doggie blanket, the one she sleeps on right next to the bed, was in the dirty clothes. The bedroom is carpeted but she really needed something else to sleep on so she found just a tiny bit of a towel which had been hung on the door knob. She put her head on about 7 inches of that towel and didn't budge all night.
Is it the scent she needs? But a new clean towel or blanket doesn't have any scent. Is it the extra comfort of more fabric? But we have the most luxurious carpeting we could find.
Is she just silly?
BTW Her favorite place in the whole world to sleep is in the laundry room on the dirty clothes. In fact I deliberately take stuff out of the baskets so she can sleep on clothes.
I keep blankets on the couch, to keep down on the dog hair, but my dogs appreciate them too. They wind up on the floor 50 times a day of course, as the dogs get up and down. If I'm sitting on the couch and haven't put a fallen blanket back up yet, one of my dogs will just stand there looking wistfully at the uncovered spot on the sofa. She won't get back up until her blankie is back in place.
Hmmm, maybe she's thinking about the dog hair getting on the sofa? Naah!
I think they love smells, including or especially their people's smells.
My ancient senior, George, spends most of his time sleeping in my bedroom by himself. The room is carpeted, and he has a blanket or sheet to lie on. Still, I hear him banging around, and he always empties the laundry basket for himself.
When I adopted my recent old traumatized Pomerian, I had to pick him up with something, as he was fear biting (with all three teeth). I asked for something that his (late) person had worn, as I thought it might comfort him. Didn't seem to make a difference, but it can't hurt.
I don't think it is the scent as much as the comfort. I have a picture that is the wall paper on my phone and Tony is using a bed of leaves I raked up. Have you ever watched your dog take a blanket or a pile of laundry and make it "just right"? Don't even get me going on pillows!! I have had one on top of my face so he could be comfy
I think my dog does the same thing, but so do I - sorta! I love to sit on a chair or couch as long as there's a blanket to put over my feet/legs. Even in the summer, don't care, I need that darn blanket on me. Makes it just that much more comfortable.
This is the wrong forum for it, but I'd love for someone to explain cats and cardboard boxes to me.
You and me both. Cats are so mysterious at times. By comparison, dogs are easy to figure out.
