People are still doing that, Katie. It's still a good method of identification, even with microchipping becoming popular.

Yes my baby is chipped. We adopted her from a pound in CA and that is one thing that comes with the adoption. I feel better knowing she has it.

So, this was your litter? How did you get them AKC #'s that young if they were still registered as a litter to you? Or was it the litter # you had tatooed onto them?

When I 1st Started Breeding It was litter #. & I encuraged people to get the tatoos once the pups were reg in their names. Tatoos unlike Microchips Can be Seen by Everyone! Anyway a few years later AKC changed so that each pup had their own AKC # --------/01 or/02 etc Thats when I started doing tatoos.
I dont know if AKC is still doing this or not as I haven bred in 10+ years. My pups were tatood on their inner back leg & not painful. They seemed more conserned with the noise of the machine lol...Now Ears they hurt & if your dog is stollen thiefs cut them off!!

Ok...having it be the AKC litter # makes more sense than it being an individual AKC # at the age of 5 weeks.
Yes AKC still issue a litter # with 1,2,3 etc. When the new owner registers the pup it is issued a whole different #

On the cancer topic with the chipping, just wanted to add my thoughts.

Keep in mind - generally speaking - the people that chip their dogs are also much more likely to have them in for annual visits and to have a vet fully examine their dog if anything seems off. Because of that, if their dog has cancer they are so much more likely to find that out. People that don't chip are less likely to take their dog to the vet when it starts acting abnormally, and therefor may not even get that diagnoses.

So, as for dogs with chips having higher cancer rates, you also have to look at the dogs that weren't chipped to see if they perhaps had it but it wasn't diagnosed due to a lack of proper vet care.

Just my thoughts!
