I have a 5 month old English Bulldog that is not doing well. I was home with him all day yesterday, and he was totally fine, running and playing. I left him for an hour (crated in the kitchen like always) and when I got home, he was excited to go out. I took him outside, and within a few minutes, he vomited like 5 times. I know he didn't ingest anything, since there is nothing he could have gotten into at home. He then began vomiting and when I took his temp, it was 105.1. I called my breeder and he met me at the e-vet.
They gave him fluids and anti nausea medication and ran many tests. His fecals are normal, his bloodwork was mostly normal. The only thing they found was an elevated white blood cell count and really couldn't tell me what is wrong. He's on an antibiotic right now and hasn't thrown up since we got home, but this morning, he started havaing white thick discharge from his nose. He's not sneezing or coughing, so I doubt it's kennel cough. I should add that on Sunday, we went to a huge Bulldog event in Long Beach and there were about 300 dogs present, so he had lots of dog contact that day. We also mistakenly let him drink from the communal water bowls, which I will never do again.
Any ideas as to what this could be? I'm so worried for him and kind of upset that I paid $730 last night and got no answers from the alleged best animal hospital in the country. I don't know what to do and hate to see him so out of it.
I would also take him back to the vet. He presented with GI symptoms and now has respiratory problems. That's completely different.
Bulldogs are high-maintenance dogs, and, like pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, especially prone to more issues when they get respiratory illnesses.
I am not sure but I would think Bulldogs would be prone to aspiration pneumonias since their upper airway anatomy is different then most dogs. Maybe he aspirated some of the vomit and now is developing an aspiration pneumonia?
Do you have a regular vet that specializes in Bulldogs? I know my brother learned that was very important back when Bruce got very sick so he contacted Bulldog Rescue and got the name of a vet that works with bulldogs. That vet is now the only vet Bruce and Chloe see.
Do keep in mind that vets just like human doctors do not have all the answers as at times it is a big detective game trying to figure out an illness. Many illnesses do not simply have one test that says "yes here is what is wrong" We want to believe that doctors and vets know all the answers but the truth is they don't and never will. That would be impossible no matter how good they are.
I had been wondering if you had gone to the Bulldog event in Long Beach as I know my brother and his wife were planning on taking the dogs to it.

Oh, I hope Porkchop feels better soon...he is one of the most beautiful, adorable dogs I have ever seen, I am so sorry he is feeling bad! I agree, I would see another vet...there have been a lot of viruses going around where I live, I have been sick on and off myself these past weeks and I rarely get sick...(in fact I took antibiotics for the first time in over 7 years...) hopefully he has something simple and quick to fix ...my prayers & healing energy go out to you and the little sweetiepie!!!
I called the vet and they said they don't need to see him since they ran all the tests. They prescribed an antibiotic after I told them about his nasal discharge and he is now on it. He ate 2 meals today and kept them down, and an hour ago drank a little bit of his water, so that's a good sign. Last time I took his temp was about an hour ago and it was 103.5, considerably lower from last night.
We have one of the best Bulldog specialists in SoCal, but he is in Riverside and that's an hour away. And, he doesn't take appointments, meaning you need to get there before they open and wait in line with all the other Bulldogs. I wish he would fix this system, since it's kind of annoying when you have a sick dog and he's forced to wait for hours to be seen. If he doesn't get better, I will take him tomorrow. The e-vet and the breeder both think it's a virus he caught at the dog event on Sunday.
I know pets get sick too, but I hate seeing him like this, especially since he is so young. A friend of ours lost a 4 month old Bulldog a couple of weeks ago. The pup died in her sleep and no one seems to know why, so I'm kind of neurotic when it comes to this boy. I can't imagine ever losing him. Thanks for keeping PC in your thoughts. :-)

Wow. That's scary. But that pup probably died of some congenital defect that nobody could have fixed. I have a feeling Porkchop is strong and healthy and he'll pull through fine. Sounds like he is on the mend already!
I know it's painful to watch them get sick. I still have that image of him running around on the dog beach you posted.
