So, when letting my dog out today, I noticed there was a white, rice grain shaped thing in his poop. I had a sinking feeling that it was worms so I got a closer look and what do you know, it's alive. Greeeeeat. Are these immature tapeworms or a different kind of worm? We don't have the $$ to take him to the vet, so does anyone have a medication recommendation that is over the counter to take care of this?
Then there's my kitty. There was some blood in his stool last night and it was the first time I've seen this. I've read that this could be internal parasites or simply just stress. He is the one that will be going to the vet.
I just hope they'll both be okay.

I would try to take them to the vet and not self-diagnose and treat your dog. The SPCA or your local animal control may have a low cost vet clinic. Just my two cents, but I wouldn't try to treat my dog's problems on my own.

These sound a lot like tapeworm segments. Regular dewormer won't get tapes, but they're more gross then harmful. You might call your vet to see if you can bring in some of the segments for them to identify. If they've seen your dog recently they may be willing to send home some tapeworm dewormer without an exam.

If they look like little grains of rice...yes, they are tapeworms. You can now buy Praziquantel over the counter...Petco sells it under TapeWorm tabs. These are for cats, but it is what it looks like...but in the canine form.
Tape Worm Tabs
If your taking the cat to the vet...may as well bring along the dog. You'll only pay one office visit fee.

Tapeworm. Go to the pet store and get the Praziquantel Shelby recommended. Vet visit not needed, so save yourself some money.

Tapeworm meds
Amazon.com: Tradewinds Tape Worm Tablets for Dogs and Puppies - 5 ea: Kitchen & Dining
I recently ordered this for my big dog. There are 5 pills in there. My dog weighs 60lbs so I gave her 4. It goes according to their weight. You have to read the instructions. I too, just happened to see my one dog poop one day and saw all the tapeworms. They come from fleas. You have to put Frontline on your dog too!
The above ships quick, I got it in like 4 days!
I do not know if it is sold over the counter. Duh! They do, just read the above.

Yup...that's the same stuff and it does work. I might add...you will see cheaper stuff, and have heard alot of the stuff sold over the counter is a waste of money. I can 100% attest, this stuff works.

Great! Thank you so much. You're saving me some money for these two. The dog is Frontlined but the cat is not. I'll put that on my shopping list.

Take the dog and a stool sample to the vet. Most worms that go through the system are alive when they come out, they are probably not tapeworms from the description. Give the dog a really good bath with a feal shampoo and then put something like Frontline on it and keep doing this once a month.

If you are still planning to take the cat to the vet at least take a stool sample from the dog too! The vet should be willing to run tests on that just to make sure. If it is tapeworms you can get the meds already suggested cheaper but the vet will know best. Good luck! Hope both of your furry friends are ok
