If there is no class near you you might be able to find a "training buddy" who might be a bit farther along than you.
Positive reinforcement is a good methodlology but you will need to eval. your dog and you and how you work together as a team.
There are some really good methods out there pleny of books and DVD's...the best rule of thumb is to do what "feels right for you" My horse trainer of many years would encourage us to attend clinics put on by "world class" trainers and on more than one occasion I refused to spur or whip my horse as requested because she/he wasn't clear on what he was trying to get us to do. Knowing how my horses were trained that it would not be effective so I told them if they would explain step by step what they were trying to get us to achieve I belive I can ask my horse in an appropriate manor without the heavy hand.
