Where have I been? I had not seen these before and the vet staff recommended them to me as Layla (who had major sdurgery) won't swallow pills. She just holds it in her mouth until you think it's gone and then she spits it out. But she took 2 pills in pill pockets this evening with NO trouble! I have had many dogs (and cats) over the years and she is by far the most stubborn about pills. These things are a miracle. If you have a finicky/picky dog who won't take pills easily, pill pockets are the way to go!

They're expensive, though!

I use the 'three gob of cheese (or liverwurst)' method:

Put three gobs of cream cheese on the counter/cutting board.

In the SECOND gob put the evil pill.

Call your unsuspecting pooch, and get ready to move QUICKLY.

Give gob #1 (no pill), followed VERY QUICKLY by gob #2 (with pill) and then even more quickly with gob #3 (no pill). 99% of the time the dog swallows them all and never realizes the pill was in #2!

That is what I use. Half a slice of cheese, fold the pill in it and gulp! My dogs also like their pills folded in provolone!

I'm lucky in that my dog will just eat pills... if you put it on top of a treat, he'll just take it all. I've tried the pill pockets witih my cat though, and he sat there smacking for about 20 minutes like he was eating a caramel, and wouldn't touch it the next day. I will admit it was hilarious I wonder if they're good for their teeth?

I'd never heard of pill pockets before I read this. What are they made of? I can imagine they are very useful if your dog takes multiple pills per day. Luckily, all I have to do is put a pill in a gob of peanut butter, and my little guy swallows the thing whole! BTW, thanks for the info about them ~
