We have a white foster Boxer (probably our new family member). We have had him for twoish months maybe. When we first got him he didn't shed much at all. I know they, as a breed, shed - but his shedding wasn't too bad, or overly noticeable. Now, he's POURING out the hair. I mean, just a ton. Super noticeable on the hard flooring, couches, clothes, etc. Flies off if we take our hand down his back. We had one Boxer before - he had a skin problem, so he shed a lot because of that.
This Boxer has had a recent health checkup, current on everything, and eats quality food.
I guess I am wondering what is normal for shedding?
He could be shedding out his summer coat or shedding out the food he was fomerly fed. Go to the nearest equine supply store and buy a shedding stone, use it on him like you would a brush (going with the growth of hair) outside of course. It works in getting tons out.
That's what I was wondering, if it was seasonal - but I wasn't sure short haired dogs did that... I know Aussies, Newfies and other thick haired dogs did...
I would think not long, usually they shed a lot in the spring and fall. If it's copious ongoing amounts and there's scratching, it could be something else though (mites, allergies etc), sometimes allergies aren't apparent at first but pop up later, even if they're on the same food. You're not using carpet powders or foams, are you?, that can trigger scratching (although it sounds like it's more shedding than scratching). Same with detergent changes, would also keep his nails short. Have heard good things about the swiffer, I know it's a pain though.
I also have a white boxer. She is one year old. I have rescued dogs for years and have never had one that sheds so much. I dress up for work and spend about 1/2 a day vacuuming the hair off of my clothes and from inside my car.
The vet says she is very healthy. Maybe she just seems to shed more because her hair is white and noticed more. I also have an older brown dog and there is definately a difference when I brush them. She gets brushed once a day outside. He gets brushed once a week.
