We adopted Hobbs from the shelter about 4 weeks ago. He still is underweight and his coat is extremely dried out and his whiskers broken off. His coat just doesn't look healthy but vet had no comments.Could there be a vitamin deficiency or could this be from the likelihood he was kept outdoors in NM?

Poor Hobbs! Whiskers aren't just hairs, they have nerve endings and it must be painful for him to have broken them. No advice, just get the best dog food you can. Some people put oil in the food, search this forum about food and you'll see what they recommend. I don't remember as I don't do it.

Dermcaps are EXCELLENT: they rejuvenated my senior rescue chihuahua's coat - it SHINES now!

Comparison shop online- they're not costly. And my chihuahua happily swallows the entire capsule, as long as it's covered in cream cheese!

Try Springtime Inc - All Natural Supplements for Horses, Dogs, and People, Springtime Inc. Supplements, Springtime Inc. for Horses, Springtime Inc. for Dogs, Springtime Inc. for People, Chondroitin sulfate, Glucosamine HCL, MSM, Vitamin C, Bioflavonoids,. My breeder swears by their "Fresh Factors" skin and coat conditioner. We've been using it with excellent results for 8 years now.

I feed Solid Gold, and supplement with sardines, salmon, egg (once a week) and plain yogurt. Sometimes I also add flax seed.

Wow that's a lot of verbiage that comes up in place of website only!

And try digestive enyzmes and Omega oils along with a good quality dog food.

What Vet would have "NO COMMENT" to any question concerning one's pet? First off, switch vets! You don't know what diet or conditions Hobbs had before adoption. Make sure he/she is up to date on all shots, and wormed. Give him/her a couple of months or so, things should improve, if not, go to a vet who has a caring comment or two. Best of luck!

My one dog's coat was the same way when rescued and that was from diet, rather lack of as he was found frozen to the ground with no food, water or shelter

At the time we were feeding Canidae, chock full of the needed Omega 3's and 6's and he blossomed in no time. Due to allergies they now both eat California Natural and they both still have beautiful coats

I was thinking the same thing!
I would call the vets office and ask them to explain about his coat as you are concerned. If they ask you to bring the dog back in tell them you will only if you will not be charged again for the visit.
Don't be afraid to ask questions of your vets small animal vets are the worst at milking you for your hard earned money. Honestly I would look for a large animal vet that also treats small animals they are by far the best vets.

I give my dogs a Vitamin E capsule with their food. It seemed to work wonders with my little senior whose coat was dry and flaky from an injury (stress) and Prednisone.
Best wishes with your new best friend, and good on you for adopting.
