This happened to me once. I put up flyers about my missing dog with my phone number. Someone called with details about her appearance and collar and wanted money in exchange. I worked with the police to try to capture the jerk and get my dog back but he never met our rendezvous appointments. later I found my dog dead.

Please people keep your dogs SECURED at all times. I know this family is truly suffering.

Where did you find your dog?

In the woods behind my fenced in yard where I last saw her. The mentally disturbed kid who tried to get money used to pet her while I walked her on the leash in our neighborhood. he was a real mess. he later OD at 18. He was 14 when he screwed with me. Necropsy was inconclusive so there was not much I could do except be present and give testimony for making terroristic threats. he said if I didn't pay he would sell her to a research lab and then proceeded to try to tell me what would happen to her there. A real nut case.
