I posted this earlier today on a pet forum I frequent. I find it quite ridiculous, honestly.

It makes me even more upset that the article seems to indicate that the dogs are so expensive in China because they are very good guard dogs! I don't know if he will acting as a guard dog in any form for this woman, but I'm sure there is another breed that will guard just as well!!

Just think, if there's anyone else willing to spend as much on a dog as she did, she'll be able to more than make all of her money back once she breeds her dogs and sells the puppies!!!

The sad thing is, that money could have been used towards something good, such as helping the animals in China. They have a pretty far way to come as far as animal rights go.

I've recently begun to discover that non-Westernized countries have a much different concept of pets and breeds than most Western countries do. I've been told by someone who lives in Egypt that nobody wants mixed breed cats. There is a great discrimination against them because they're basically considered to be on the same level as rodents! Everyone wants purebreds.

This is ridiculous, the ostentatious display of wealth. The money would have been better spent on a campaign to treat animals more humanely. This sort of lavishness also is a slap on the face to so many people languoring in poverty in that country!

I second that opinion! Wonder if she adopted a rescue dog and donated her 'excess' funds to a few rescues. The excesses of some is unfathomable.

I guess each to her/his own, but I know if I had an extra half mil lying around a few rescues would be enjoying some help.

I have a feeling that rescues are the last thing on this lady's mind.
From Wikipedia:
In recent years, more wealthy Chinese are buying Tibetan Mastiff as a means to show-off their status. It was reported in Sep 2009[4] that a rich Chinese woman spent more than USD 600,000 or 4 million yuan to buy an 18 month old pure bred Tibetan Mastiff, which she named Yangtze No. 2. Less than 160 original Tibetan Mastiff's of pure bred origin are known to exist and few of these would be considered show quality and able to command half a million dollars. Yangtze No. 2. would be considered a leading contender for top award at a major kennel show.

Exclamation World’s most expensive dog cost $582,000

It sounds like a shaggy dog story, but it isn’t. A Tibetan Mastiff is believed to have broken the record as the world’s most expensive dog — sold to a young Chinese millionaire for a mind-blowing $582,000.

The owner, known only as Ms. Wang, traveled to Qinghai province of northwest China to purchase the 18-month old dog, named Yangtze River Number Two.
