Boarding prices vary accoring to size of the dog. My large dogs cost $28 for the first dog and $12 for the second dog. That's $40 per day for both dogs----sharing a deluxe suite, which is a large 'room' which is a large cage. If I wanted them to share a 'suite' it would be $55 per day. Once we went on a week long vacation in a cottage on Lake Erie. It cost more to board the animals that it did for our cabin. I think it's well worth it. The kennel is great!
I've had terrible experience with leaving our dogs with a relative. We took a trip to NYC last month and I tried to avoid using the kennel by having them stay with my SIL. She's a super dog lover, has two dogs, a fenced in yard, etc. BUT EVERY DAY THEY GOT LOOSE FROM HER YARD! She left her back door open for them to go into the yard throughout the day while she was at work! I guess she figured that it would be safe having a fenced in yard. She didn't take into consideration that dogs can jump fences and open fence gates. Plus, neighborhood children can leave gates open too. It's amazing I didnt' lose my dogs!
My friend lives in Florida, down the street from a boarding place. In the last 3 days, 2 dogs got loose from the same facility. I don't know how common that is, but it's totally unacceptable. Luckily, residents in the area found the dogs and called the number on the tags. I'm sure the owners were less than pleased. So, your dog can escape from a boarding facility as well. Letting dogs have unsupervised access to a yard is asking for trouble, whether a relative's house or a boarding facility.

I'd be curious to know who was hands on with the dogs at the time. The only time a dog as "gotten away" from our facility is when the handler was the owner of the dog. So on a Friday morning, I claimed ownership of the four lane street and retrieved the dog myself
I checked out our vets boarding area personally when shopping around. The way it is set up...the animal would have to make it's way through a series of doors and hallways, and exit through the waiting room and out the front door. Just as difficult to make it through to the one and only back door. A near impossiblity! He has a great set-up.
Like one poster said, schedule a visit. Check out the facilities and talk to the staff.
After moving to a new town, I made the mistake of going to a boarding facility without checking them out properly first. I called them and asked lots of questions and they gave all the right answers. When I arrived, I was shocked. Their idea of "secure" fencing was a joke, my dogs would have been out of there in minutes. Dogs were outside, in a yard full of poop, totally unsupervised. I had explained on the phone that one of my dogs was beaten as a puppy and was very, very timid around new people; and, therefore needed patient, gentle encouragement. They assured me they dealt with this situation frequently. Well, their way of "dealing" with my frightened dog when she didn't come was to walk over, grab her by the collar and literally drag her inside. I immediately said, "no way", took my pups back home, and canceled my trip. When I was getting them back in my truck, the woman said to me, "you, know, maybe you should try to train that one, so she has some manners". I was speechless.
The vast majority of places are not anything like this one, and most of the staff do it because they are kind people who really love animals, but make sure you do some research.
