Can anyone tell me anything about this breed? I have read about it but wondering if anyone had one? Am I correct in the thought that this breed is not the same as a pit bull? Our oldest son wants to get one but I want to know more about the breed before he makes this decision. She would be living at our house until he gets his own place. According to what I have read they are good with children and other dogs. Any info would be appreciated.

I have no real first hand info on them. Hopefully, someone else on the forum can help you with temperment, etc. But, something to keep in the back of your mind.....I do believe the Amercian BullDog is one listed on a lot of banned lists. So, if your son is going to be looking for an apt., it is something to think about. He may find it hard to move in with a dog of this breed.

A good friend of mine has one. She has 3 young children and the dog is great with them. She has no issues with her dog whatsoever.

I guess I should add...the reasons behind the banning on list of dogs are multiple. For instance...the Golden Retriever. It has been placed on the list purely for it's size.

I had one, she just showed up at my house one day. She was the most lovable dog I've ever had. I drove a tractor-trailer, she'd sit in the drivers' seat anytime it was vacant, all night while I slept. At home she'd stare out the front window. Beat any alarm system. She looked like the world's biggest pit bull terrior, but I doubt she'd ever be aggressive. Just a great big (and heavy) teddy bear. My next dog will be another one. Check with a rescue to start. Start with this website and ask in the forums. There are people who are experts in American Bulldogs that post there. I love them as a breed. I do think they are not a dog for everyone though. Do a lot of research before jumping in and adopting a large, powerful breed (or any dog for that matter).
And no, it is not the same as a pit bull. However, everyone will think it is a pit bull because they do look like an overgrown pit to the average person.

I have 3. They are great dogs. The main thing to remember is they need lots of exercise. Off leash exercise so they can run. They can be hyper. My male eats toys so you have to watch for that, the other two don't though, so it might just be him They don't chew on the furniture or anything important like that though. I love them and will always own at least one.Read more: //www.city-data.com/forum/dogs/...#ixzz0VN020yI7

I have four, and have been in the breed for going on 20 years...
Quick and Dirty: There are two main lines of American Bulldogs, Classic/Johnson and Perfomance/Scott-Painter-LeClerq
Classic/Johnson have a more exagerated bulldog look, while the Scott/perfomance have a more elongated "terrier" like snout. The Perfomance also are much better workers, have fewer health issues, and can sometimes resemble giant pitbulls.

Johnson's Elrod-Classic/Johnson/Bully type

Scotts Akira/Perfomance bred Scott type
Two very diffrent dogs, with diffrent working abilities. But both very good companions. Both of these dogs are foundation studs in many pedigrees, so you really get one or the other, or....you can get a hybrid, which is the mixing of both lines (the best in my opinion...

OMG, I wasn't even aware they had banned so many dogs. This is insane!!What's next...little pekinese and pomeranians? I knew pits and rotties were banned in many States; this is really frustrating. I will definitely sign up, have bookmarked the page and will pass it on. Thanks so much for providing that link!
