Looks like my pup pup has used Trifexis in the past but I see things about it being bad for your pet so I am here to ask your opinion.
What do you use for your dog for the prevention of fleas/ticks/heartworms?
The vets office offered a few different things and it was like a million different things that either you do this or your do that and add this for that and all of that.
Heartguard (heartworm) and Nexguard (fleas) both are chewable and my dogs eat them with no problem. I used trifexis for a while and then my one of my dogs threw it up. I decided to change after that.
I think I stated here sometime before that I used fenthion for fleas for my dogs. And it worked on ticks too. I would use an eyedropper and drop the liquid fenthion in several spots over the skin on my dog's hind end. Worked like a charm. With permission, I also used it on a kitten (WAAAY lower dose - dose goes by body weight) at one time when I was taking care of her for some friends. The kitten was in my large dog crate while I was working and when I came home, the dead fleas had come off her by the millions.
Understand, the fleas and ticks had to bite my dog to ingest the poison and die, so there was still a twice yearly check for worms at the vet.
Fenthion is a poison they use in cattle to treat fleas, but I never had any trouble with it. My dog died of lymphosarcoma, but he was over 11 years old when he got that, beyond what many male Dobermans live anyway (well, at the time).
I'm not even sure if you can still get fenthion form a vet's office today.
I don't remember what I used for heartworm, but I know my dog had a pill he needed to take every day. It wasn't a chewable one, so I had to throw it into the back of his mouth and then give him a biscuit. That was a treat for him, so when I said, "Pill time!", he was right there with his mouth open. I'm not sure that giving him a weekly pill or a chewable one wouldn't have taken some of the enjoyment out of his life.
I should add that on occasion I also used a flea bomb in my little house. But I think I did that twice in 8 years.
Nuheart for heartworm (generic heartguard) - $20 for 6 doses
Petarmor for fleas and ticks (generic frontline) - $17/ 3 month
Works like a charm.
