and why would you wish to do that? Because it makes the dog look cool or "bad"
You must be pretty young ( this is a young guy thing done for "toughness effect ") & shouldnt have a pit to begin with .. cropping is NOT needed by these dogs .. It serves no purpose .. I understand a crop or dock for breed/show standards but Pitties arent cropped for standard they are cropped for the "look" and the imidation factor IMHO at least .. I own a pit.. have had several and ear cropping is stupid vanity thing .. my rescued Pits were abused and seemed were all cropped for owners vanity
Cropping is PAINFUL! Natrural is Way to go! Please rethink this!
Breed standard is where I am ok with cropping or docking .. and should always be done by a Vet.. the pup is made pain free for the operation and kept comfortable .. They fight the cone worse than they fuss about the ears or tail .. I think the cone is more a distract them item than anything else just because they are able to get past the pain in a very short time if its managed properly ,,
HOWEVER I do not believe in docking or cropping to shine up an owners ego .. Ear crops on some dogs are really unacceptable .. I prefer the dropped ears of all dogs but its done to many because of vanity ..
Pits tho are a breed that already have issues with cropping and "that" look" that I would support banning ear crops for this breed and a few others ..
Natural ears on pitbulls are cute! Why put your dog through that if it's unnecessary? I personally dislike cropped ears on dogs where it is the standard if they're not going into the show circuit or being used as a working dog. Dobermans have wonderful floppy ears too.
My grandmother adopted a pit from a rescue that unfortunately had the fighting cropped ears (meaning that the ear was almost entirely gone). It made people incredibly wary of her, even though she was the sweetest and biggest pushover I had ever seen.

I agree with you! I've had 3 purebred pits over the years and never had their ears cropped; never even thought of it. They were beautiful dogs period and their ears were fine. For those who want pits for the "toughness or macho factors" - please get the dog because you want to take care of it and give it a good home. If someone needs a dog to be tough, it's pretty sad and I'm not accusing the OP of this..just saying.
If you're going to use the pit as a catch dog, crop the ears. It'll keep him from bleeding to death if a hog bites one off. Since I haven't heard that hog hunting is a big sport in your area, it would probably be best to avoid an unnecessary surgical procedure and leave his ears alone.
