I LOVE LOVE LOVE these dogs!!!
I have always had large dogs and am now thinking about going to the rescue and adopting a Boston Terrier. Any info on personality and the such of these adorable little furkids?
Thanks
Bostons have tons of energy, most are great around kids, they can't handle extreme heat due to their facial structure so you need to be extra careful as not to overheat them. Don't fall for the non-shedding stories you might hear, they do their fair share of shedding
It's best to keep them busy or they find their own ways, which might not always be something you'll be thrilled with.
I have a two year old Boston we all absolutely adore! I've always had a dog or two, but he is hands down the best dog we've ever had. He's very smart, a nice sturdy size and energetic in short bursts. What that means is he loves to play! play! play! but then he'll nap the rest of the day. He loves a walk, but if it is too long (over a mile) he might just sit for a spell, so he's not a good running buddy.
Ours is a great pet for our 9 and 12 y.o. boys. The only problem we have is with smaller kids - he's rambuncious and climbs on top of them.
He never needs professional grooming, 'cept for a mani or pedi (nails clipped) and always looks immaculate. We've had him since a pup and, knowing their proclivity for chewing, always had doggie chews around the house for him. He hasn't ruined anything but a pair of flip flops.
Our furbaby loves his crate and we keep it and him in a doggie cage when we are out of the house for long times - that keeps him out of trouble, too. It's his bed and he happily goes to bed when he's told.
aween, adopt that baby!! I have two grandcritters. Yeah. Both are Bostons. My first 'child' was a Boston....named her Gertrude. Gertie was very special. When my human kids came along, she was like an older sib. OK. That sounds crazy, but anyone who has a Boston will understand.
Words such as smart/intelligent are an understatement. I've seen these dogs do things that mystify. They love their people and are an asset to anyone who chooses to love them.
In public they draw a great deal of attention. Seems everyone has a Boston story in their life. Strangers have a need to do the kissy face thing with them, so be prepared. The critters love the attention!
They are inside dogs, but then again, I think all dogs are inside dogs. Bostons want to be with their owners. They think they are people. Shhhhh....don't let them know they aren't. It's much more fun that way.
Boston's are great, I could post for an hour with Heidi (our Boston) stories.
They are filled with personality, and even if you don't like animals you will love a Boston. They are head strong, think that they are the "owners" instead of it the other way around. They run fast, hint don't let them out without a leash! They are very territorial, and ours did not get along with too many other dogs, but she does love her cat! Oh, they are so very smart and very easy to train (but Heidi actually trained us).
Get that dog, run quick before someone else gets it! You won't be sorry, and will have years of stories to tell and a most loyal and loving friend.
Bostons are amazingly smart dogs. Incredibly intelligent! All of the ones my family has ever had have been very loyal as well.
They have relatively short life span (9-12 yrs?) compared to other breeds.
They are very high energy and definitely need your attention... or they may come up with some not so desirable ways to get it (as someone else mentioned!)!!
Ours have all had a "Little Napoleon" syndrome where they think they're a large dog trapped in a small dog's body Most of the time this doesn't pose a problem but it can make for some interesting experiences at times.
If I had the space, I'd get another Boston in a heartbeat. I love them! And the Boston Terrier rescues are an excellent place to find a new friend. Not sure where you're located but there's a large Boston rescue based out of Greensboro, NC. You can find them on the web.
Thank you all so much for the wonderful replies!!! I know that a Bosten would be just perfect for me. I am home most of the time and my dogs are inside dogs. My vet says he knows a Bosten Terrier that may need a home so I gave my name and number. I am sooo excited!!
Thanks again for the replies!!
