Me or my husband always go out with him since we don't have a fenced yard yet. I was also thinking it could be that he is getting cranky in his old age and just wants things his way. He is always a sweetheart though. He can be a finicky eater and he will let his food sit until he is ready to eat it. I will look into the "rescue remedy". Thanks!

How about if you feed him several hours earlier? Then after he has digested the food, say and hour or two later, take him out (go with him) and run him around a little, throw the ball, make him do some romping, or even a good walk. Activity tends to get things "moving." Then, when he goes, do the "good doggy" party thing, so he gets the point.

Maybe you could only feed him once a day in the morning (not sure if that's ok with his blood sugar, but your vet could advise), and then he would poop by bedtime.

Just an idea...good luck. It's no fun having to let the dog out at 3AM!

This is our deal, too. We don't just let him out in the back yard to go, mainly because he can't be trusted not to jump the fence offleash, and if tethered, all he'll do is bark. He really only poops on walks. That's his schedule. We also only feed him once a day.
