I had a poodle that I kept going for 8 months with heart failure, but eventually the amount of lasix needed to keep the lungs from filling with fluid shut the kidneys down and we had to give up and put her down.

She was on
Vetmedin
Atenalol
Azodyl (kidneys)
Tumil K (potassium because Lasix depletes it)
Hikodin for the coughing
Sildenafil (Viagra relaxes blood vessels)
Benzapril
I had to monitor her heart rate and make adjustments.

I have another 5 y/o poodle with a slight murmur. The cardiologist said he has a 1% mitral valve leak that clinically means nothing. It could progress. It could never progress there is nothing you can do about it either way and it doesn't affect him so basically we will monitor him but ignore it.

I have a chihuahua, about 10 years old, who went into heart failure in Nov. 2010. He was put on lasix, vetmedin and enalipril. Now, a year later, he is a little worse and the dr. added spironolactone. I am hoping he can hold on. He has severe mitral valve regurgitation and "controlled heart failure". Very sad. But I agree with one of the posters here that the treatment is really very easy, and it's very easy to diagnose. I think to not diagnose it is negligent, when it's pretty easy to treat. Of course, not cure.

Default Chp

Month and a half since my last post on Sadie and she still appears to be doing very well. She coughs (hacks) now and then her appetite wanes at times, but otherwise is good. 7 months ago when we brought her (passed out) to the ER vet I thought it was the end... I cherish everyday we have with her... and hope she is here for a long time. I will keep you all informed as I know it made me feel better reading others that lived for a long positive time after diagnosis. I am very (and my wife is) very careful about her medication...

I am sorry to report that we lost one of my best friends and companions last night @ 8:20 Sadie passed on in my arms... I can not explain the grief and hollow feeling I have inside now... Best of luck to all those in this situation as it can only be described by me as hard.

Our dog has congestive heart failure and is CONSTANTLY hacking--sounds like she's coughing up a hairball.
She also has the subsequent edema (super bloated)caused by the heart failure.

I can't believe she's hung on as long as she has though (over a year and a half!).

My 11 yr old shih tzu has congestive heart failure brought on by a murmur she has had since birth. While she progressively declines in strength, I have seen positive results from giving her meds, CQ-10 and low salt foods. I even put peppermint tea in her water. This helps with nausea caused by her blood pressure meds, and has kept her eating. Whatever I can do to add quality to her life.

JRT I am very sorry for your loss of Sadie......we have had two dogs expire in our arms listening to us tell them what good girls they were....and re-assure them that it was ok.....we understood if they had to go. When my Hannah was dying I called the vet just to make sure there wasnt anything else we could do.....was told to bring her in and they would do exploratory surgery.....no way! For one thing I could tell she probably wouldnt make it to the vet....and if she did I didnt want her to die on the table away from those who loved (still love) her.....then my DP held our cricket in his arms for hours, talking and soothing her, I found out later he had continued holding her and talking for a long long while after she had passed....he didnt want to put her down and end the love......by saying "she's dead".

It was good you were there for Sadie.....rest in peace.
